英文原文为 “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”。

- 有明确想达成的目标,例如职业转型、领导力提升、团队管理;
- 愿意自己思考和行动,而不是期待别人给出现成答案;
Coaching, Consulting, Therapy and Mentoring: How They Differ
Who this is for: people new to coaching, and managers or HR professionals considering coaching for their teams.
What it covers: ICF's definition of coaching; how coaching differs from consulting, therapy and mentoring; and when a coach should refer a client to a mental health professional.
ICF's definition
ICF defines coaching as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."
Two words matter: partnership, meaning coach and client work as equals; and the client's potential, meaning the answers come mainly from the client.
Four roles compared
| Focus | Who supplies the answers | Typical approach | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coach | Future goals and action ("how") | The client | Questions, listening, feedback |
| Consultant | Diagnosing and solving a problem | The consultant | Analysis and recommendations |
| Mentor | Passing on experience | The mentor | Sharing experience and advice, often long term |
| Therapist | Mental health, emotional pain, past trauma ("why") | Explored together, led by the professional | Assessment, intervention, healing |
ICF's guide frames therapy as concerned with "why" and coaching with "how." ICF's blog adds that the client is the expert on their own goals, while the coach is the expert in the process.
Growth, not remediation
ICF describes coaching as aimed at improving performance, not remediation. Coaching conversations are confidential, even when an employer pays.
When to refer
Coaches do not treat mental illness or trauma. When a client shows persistent distress or mental health concerns, a professional coach says so and suggests a counsellor or doctor. ICF publishes guidelines on referring a client to therapy.
