ICF Credentialing Changes 2026–2027: The Exam, Mentor Coaching and Portfolio Applications

对于 ACC、PCC,ICF 考生手册(2026 年 9 月修订)写明:“Mentor coaching hours completed on or before December 31, 2026, will continue to be accepted under the current requirements and do not need to be repeated.”(本站译文:2026 年 12 月 31 日或之前完成的导师教练时数,按现行要求继续认可,无须重做。)

Portfolio
- 与一位或几位持 MCS 的导师合作,时间跨度至少 3 个月;
- 其中至少 3 小时是一对一的导师教练;
- 导师至少观察并点评申请人的 3 次教练对话;
- 申请时附上由导师填写的《能力评审表》(Competency Review Form),取代原来的录音和逐字稿;
ICF Credentialing Changes 2026–2027: The Exam, Mentor Coaching and Portfolio Applications
Who this is for: candidates preparing for ACC, PCC or MCC; coaches who provide mentor coaching; and anyone planning a credential pathway.
What it covers: between November 2026 and April 2027, ICF is changing its credentialing exam, mentor coach requirements and Portfolio application process. This article sets out what ICF has announced, in date order, with a source for each point. Matters ICF has not yet clarified are flagged separately so readers can confirm them with ICF.
Four dates
| Date | What ICF has announced |
|---|---|
| 10 Nov 2026 | The new PCC/MCC credentialing exam becomes available; old and new versions run side by side |
| 1 Jan 2027 | Mentor coaches for credential candidates must hold the MCS (Mentor Coach Specialization) |
| 31 Mar 2027 | Last date to sit the current exam |
| 1 Apr 2027 | ACC and PCC Portfolio applications no longer require a performance evaluation; applications submitted from this date follow the new requirement |
The new exam
| Current (until 31 Mar 2027) | New (from 10 Nov 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Items | 78 situational judgement items | 80 items: 44 situational judgement, 36 knowledge-based multiple choice |
| Time | 180 minutes | 150 minutes, including an optional 10-minute break |
| Based on | 2019 Core Competencies, 2020 Code of Ethics | Updated (2025) Core Competencies and Code of Ethics |
| Simplified Chinese | Available | Languages not mentioned in ICF's announcement |
ICF says difficulty and pass rate will stay consistent with the current exam. It gives no guidance on which version to choose during the transition; candidates decide based on their own preparation. The new knowledge-based items measure understanding of core coaching concepts, principles, and professional standards.
Mentors must hold the MCS
From 1 January 2027, any new mentor coaching hours for ACC and PCC Portfolio candidates must be with an MCS holder. The same applies to new hours for MCC candidates; ICF confirms that MCC hours completed before that date are accepted. For ACC and PCC, the Candidate Guides (revised September 2026) state: "Mentor coaching hours completed on or before December 31, 2026, will continue to be accepted under the current requirements and do not need to be repeated." Hours completed on or after 1 January 2027 must be with an MCS holder.
No more recordings on the ACC/PCC Portfolio path
For ACC and PCC Portfolio applications submitted from 1 April 2027:
- work with one or more MCS mentor coaches over at least three months;
- at least three hours must be individual mentor coaching;
- the mentor observes and reviews at least three of the candidate's coaching sessions;
- the application includes the Competency Review Form, completed by the mentor, which replaces recordings and transcripts;
- the candidate keeps a Session Observation Form for each observed session, to submit if audited.
ICF's announcement does not mention any change to total hours, or group mentoring. Level 1 and Level 2 programme students need take no separate action; their programme will incorporate the change, and certificates from programmes completed before 1 April 2027 will still be accepted for later applications. MCC applications still require a performance evaluation.
Assessment for ACC and PCC therefore shifts from a single recording to a mentor's observation over several months, which places more weight on the mentor's credentials and approach.
Which rules apply to you
Compare your training completion date, the date you reach your coaching hours, your mentoring start and end dates, and your planned application date against the four dates above. Where questions remain, ICF or your training programme has the final word.
