How to Log Coaching Hours for an ICF Credential: Counting Rules, Coaching Logs and Audits
ICF 的定义是:与一位专门聘请该教练的客户进行一次完整的 60 分钟对话,计为 1 小时教练经验(本站译文;原文:“a client who has hired you specifically as their coach”)。

- 直接为客户教练并收取报酬,包括以物易物,例如同伴互换教练(peer-to-peer coaching),或以商品、服务交换教练;
- 内部教练:教练是本人工作职责的一部分;
- 导师教练、教练督导,以及与客户解读测评;
- 培训项目中的练习,或为同学、讲师、导师做的教练;在课堂之外为真实客户做、且与培训学分分开的除外;
- 内部教练中,为自己的直接下属做教练;

官网原话是“A simple spreadsheet is your best friend here”,并提供了模板下载(见下节)。
- 客户姓名;
- 用来联系客户的方式,例如电子邮箱或电话;
- 教练关系的开始和结束日期;
- 一位参与者的姓名和电子邮箱(不必列出其他参与者姓名或团体名称);
- 教练合作(coaching engagement)的开始和结束日期;
- 为该团体或团队教练的付费时数和公益时数;
- 教练本人姓名;
- 联系人姓名及联系方式;
- 联系人在机构中的职务说明;
- 教练本人在机构中的角色说明;
- 对机构保密政策的确认;

- 确认已取得客户同意,可以安全保存其信息;

How to Log Coaching Hours for an ICF Credential: Counting Rules, Coaching Logs and Audits
Who this is for: coaches in or after training who are building hours towards an ICF credential and need to keep proper records.
What it covers: which hours count, paid versus pro bono hours, what does not count, the coaching log fields ICF lists, the ICF template, client consent and privacy, and audits. For the hour totals required at each level, see ICF Credentials Compared: ACC, PCC and MCC Requirements.
When hours start
Client coaching hours completed after coaching education begins can be counted. ICF defines the start as any course of at least 30 hours, at least 24 of them focused on the ICF Core Competencies.
What one hour is
One hour is a full 60-minute real-time session with "a client who has hired you specifically as their coach", face to face, by phone or live via technology. Sessions shorter than 60 minutes count as partial hours (30 minutes = 0.5 hours).
Paid and pro bono hours
Paid hours: coaching for payment or barter (such as peer-to-peer coaching or coaching in exchange for goods or services); internal coaching that is part of the coach's job responsibilities; third-party coaching provided through an arrangement with an organization (the organization pays the coach). Pro bono hours: coaching donated or volunteered at no cost. ICF's log fields include the paid and pro bono hours for each client, and the ICF template separates the two.
What does not count
Mentor coaching, coaching supervision and reviewing assessments with clients; coaching within a training programme or with students, trainers or mentors, unless done "outside the classroom, with a real client, and separate from the training credits"; coaching direct reports; training, teaching, mentor coaching and facilitating workshops (listed under group coaching).
Group and team coaching
Participants must set the agenda, with real-time interaction. Only groups of 15 or fewer count, unless a co-coach is present; with a co-coach, the time is split between the coaches. Each participant counts as an individual client, but time is not multiplied by the number of participants. Group and team hours are recorded separately from individual client hours.
Log fields ICF lists
ICF does not state a fixed format ("A simple spreadsheet is your best friend here") and offers a template download.
- Individual clients: name; the contact information used to reach the client (e.g. email or phone); start and end date of the coaching relationship; paid and pro bono hours.
- Group or team clients: name and email of one participant (other participants' names and the group name are not needed); start and end date of the coaching engagement; paid and pro bono hours; number of individuals in the group or team.
- Internal or third-party clients: logged like other clients, unless a confidentiality policy applies. In that case, a reference letter signed on company letterhead gives the coach's name, the contact person's name and contact information, descriptions of the contact person's and the coach's roles in the organization, confirmation of the confidentiality policy, and the number of hours, number of clients and time period.
The experience requirements page asks for relationship start and end dates; it does not say whether each session must be logged individually.
ICF log template
ICF offers a free Excel "Client Coaching Log Template" for members and non-members. The page says it records client names, contact information and session dates, distinguishes individual and group coaching, and separates paid and pro bono hours. It does not list the column names.
Consent and privacy
Client consent comes before adding a client to the log, documented and in line with relevant laws such as the EU's GDPR. Without consent, the client's name stays off the log, and ICF notes those sessions could not be verified if the application were audited. ICF does not specify a consent form. For online platforms, ICF advises reviewing the platform's policies, terms of agreement and data privacy guidelines.
Applying and audits
The application reports total hours with an attestation that they meet ICF's standards; no detailed client log is submitted. ICF periodically audits applications. Selected applicants receive specific instructions, provide additional documentation as instructed, confirm client consent to store client information securely, and keep records organized and compliant with privacy and data protection policies. Even during an audit, applicants are not asked to submit coaching logs directly to ICF. ICF does not list the audit documents on the page. Applicants are bound by the ICF Code of Ethics; false or misleading information may result in denial or revocation of the credential and could bar reapplying for up to five years. ICF does not state how long records must be kept.
