Since 1998, the ICF Core Competencies have set the standard for professional coaching, defining the knowledge and skills needed to create meaningful impact."
- 认证:作为 ICF 认证的基础("used as the basis for ICF certifications");

- 没有新增主能力,八项能力保持不变;
- 新增 5 条子能力(sub-competencies);
- 修订 11 条现有子能力;
- 更新 1 项能力的定义;
ICF 表示,这次修订是为了更清晰一致("to enhance clarity and consistency"),并不代表对能力要求的实质性改变("do not represent substantive changes to expectations")。
1.26.2026)本身只写 "The document follows the ICF Core Competencies",未注明版本。

An Overview of the ICF Core Competencies: Structure, the Eight Competencies and the 2025 Update
Who this is for: coaching students preparing for an ICF credential, and practising coaches who want to know what changed in 2025.
What it covers: what the Core Competency model is used for, when the 2025 version was released and what ICF says changed, the four domains and eight competencies, and where to find the official text and translations.
What the model is for
ICF states that the Core Competencies have set the standard for professional coaching since 1998. ICF names three uses: the basis for ICF credentials, the curriculum of ICF-accredited coaching programmes, and a framework for coaches' ongoing development.
Release and timing
The 2025 document is marked "Released September 2025" (rev. 09.08.25), and ICF announced it on 8 September 2025. ICF says it updates the Core Competencies every five to seven years.
ICF has not published a single effective date. The dates it has given:
- 10 November 2026: the new PCC-MCC Exam opens and the transition period begins.
- 31 March 2027: last date for the current Credentialing Exam.
- 1 April 2027: accredited education providers must align their curriculum with the 2025 Core Competencies to keep accreditation.
ICF has not said when the 2025 version applies to other parts of credentialing, such as performance evaluations.
What ICF says changed
The update draws on a 14-month global job analysis (literature reviews, focus groups, task and KAO analyses, surveys and a review of the existing model) with data from nearly 3,000 coaches, ICF members and non-members. According to ICF:
- no new main competencies; the eight competencies remain;
- five new sub-competencies;
- 11 existing sub-competencies revised;
- one competency definition updated (Competency 2, Embodies a Coaching Mindset, per the comparison chart);
- a new glossary of terms in the appendix.
ICF does not label which sub-competencies are new or revised; refer to the comparison chart on the ICF website.
ICF also refined the Minimum Skills Requirements "to enhance clarity and consistency", and says these "do not represent substantive changes to expectations." The current Minimum Skills Requirements PDFs (rev. 1.26.2026) themselves say only "The document follows the ICF Core Competencies," without naming an edition.
Domains and competencies
Summaries below are written by Mingwen Coaching, not translations of ICF's definitions. English competency and domain names are ICF's.
Foundation
- Demonstrates Ethical Practice: the ethical conduct and professional standards a coach upholds throughout the work.
- Embodies a Coaching Mindset: an open, curious, client-centred mindset, sustained through ongoing learning and reflection.
Co-Creating the Relationship
- Establishes and Maintains Agreements: clear agreements with the client and stakeholders on the engagement and each session, revisited when needed.
- Cultivates Trust and Safety: an environment where the client can speak freely, with mutual respect and trust.
- Maintains Presence: being fully attentive and present, open, flexible and grounded.
Communicating Effectively
- Listens Actively: attending closely to the client, including what goes unsaid and the context around the client.
- Evokes Awareness: using questions, silence, metaphor and other tools to support client insight and learning.
Cultivating Learning and Growth
- Facilitates Client Growth: turning learning and insight into action while respecting client autonomy.
The credentialing exam
ICF states the new PCC-MCC Exam, available from 10 November 2026, is aligned with the 2025 updates to the Core Competencies and Code of Ethics. As of the check date, the PCC/MCC exam page still says the current exam assesses the 2019 version. The current exam can be taken until 31 March 2027; candidates testing or retesting on or after 1 April 2027 take the new exam.
Official text and translations
The English text is on ICF's resource page. ICF says the Core Competencies are available in 16 languages; as of the check date, the 2025 resource page lists 11 languages under "Download the New ICF Core Competencies in Your Language": Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. No Chinese translation is listed, and ICF has not said whether one is planned.
